Nichrome general properties
Nichrome wire in glass fusing
Glass fusing is a glass fabrication technique which involves heating glass in a kiln until it reaches the point where it is soft, which allows the manipulation of the glass in a variety of ways. It is used in industrial glass manufacturing to produce specialised glass laminates but is best known as a ‘creative’ process.
Due to the good malleability of nichrome wire it is easily formed onto various shapes and latices that can be fused between layers of glass, for artistic effect, in the kiln.
Nichrome wire is also the perfect choice for fusing into glass objects where some kind of mounting mechanism is required like a hanging mount in a wall plaque or the attachments in glass jewellery. Although the nichrome wire discolours, becoming dull, during the firing process it is easily polished to regain its appearance.
Nichrome wire – Flame testing
Nichrome wire is often used as an alternative to platinum for flame testing.
Flame testing can be used to identify the presence of a small number of metal ions in a compound (Not all metal ions give flame colours).
Flame tests are usually by far the easiest way of identifying Group 1 compounds to see which metal is present. For other metals, there are usually other methods which are more reliable – but the flame test can give a useful hint as to where to look.
The process involves cleaning the platinum or nichrome wire with concentrated hydrochloric acid and placing it in a flame until no colour is produced. Then the wire is dipped in the acid again and then into the compound to be tested and placed back in the flame. Different compounds produce different flame colours.
Platinum is the best choice for flame testing as it produces no colour whereas Nichrome wire will always produce a very slight orange tint in the flame, but due to the high cost of platinum Nichrome wire is often used.
Nichrome wire – Hot wire foam cutters
NiChrome Wire is the optimal wire choice for foam cutters for a variety of reasons, but particularly because it is resistant against corrosion and oxidation at very high temperature.
There are two readily available types of wire, NiChrome A & NiChrome C
- Nichrome A contains 80% Nickel and 20% Chromium
- Nichrome C contains 60% Nickel, 16% Chromium, & 24% Iron
By comparison, there isn’t too much different between the two wires with the exception of the following
- Nichrome C has a little higher resistance per foot
- Nichrome C increases more resistance per foot as temperature increases
- Nichrome A has higher tensile strength
- Nichrome A has a higher melting point
Based on this information it would appear that NiChrome A is better to use, but as it stands NiChrome C is a bit easier to acquire and a bit cheaper. But practically speaking, there is not much functional difference between the two when it comes to cutting foam.
Approximate amperage you will need to heat a straight oxidized wire in air to the specified temperature.
